At 13 my 1968 summertime highlight was the Friday night dance at St. Linus church parking lot. Me and Nancy (best friends since kindergarten) didn’t just wait for Fridays. We’d crank the volume while her mom was at work, roll up the rugs and grind, sashay, twirl our bodies from bedroom to kitchen, down the hallway, into the living room dancin’ this path back and forth stopping only to change the record.
That summer was gone from my memory until I heard about the movie “Get On Up”; about the Life, the Music of James Brown. I flashed back to my mostly awkward adolescence… A time in life at best confusing, and the rest of the time having to endure less-than-flattering nicknames. (Remember the kids doll-toy ‘Flatsy’? The commercial sang: flatsy, flatsy, you’re flat and that’s that… as a late blooming girl – I was marked.)
On those summer Friday nights in the roped off church parking lot everybody checkin’ each other out (some things never change), I would wait, my body uninspired, while others danced to the tunes that were too tame for me. Then somehow, someway, somebody in charge dared to break the church-acceptable-music-rules and spin James!
I would close my eyes, grind my hips and switch-step my feet, spin… The other kids eased back… fear, awe, disturbed by raw divinity in motion. It didn’t matter to me; they cleared a space for this oblivious-to-their-judgments dancer. It was a force field around me – my James induced Dance Trance!
