A New Model for Raising-Educating Children & Families

Ancient civilizations share a deep respect for knowing the type of everyone in our family – and especially learning the type of our children as soon as they are born.

According to the ancient stories, when a child was born, it was taken by the parents to the medicine person of the community to determine the real and true nature of the child’s Essence, Being and Personality type.

If it so happened that neither of the parents were the same corresponding type as the child, then a close family member of the same type was found and identified so the child could have a bond and relationship, from the beginning of their Life, with someone of similar nature. This was seen as something of utmost importance in the education and awareness of both the child and the parents.

FS-children ancient societiesSince each type has its own particular needs, ways of expression and most effective ways of learning – it was felt the best way to serve a child to become the healthiest in Body, Mind and Spirit and reach its fullest potential in this lifetime, was to nurture its True nature by surrounding it with things that accord with, foster, develop, encourage and support the expression of its own type of vibrational frequency.

Children in ancient societies spent the first seven years of their life being raised by the community. At this earliest and most important stage, this gave the child the widest variety of personal Life patterns and experiences in order to give the Self an expansive frame of reference to draw upon as they explored the potential and possibilities for their Life.

Children Are Living Arrows

Children were not regarded as personal possessions of parents, or like clay to be molded into the image or the desires of parents or society. Rather, the relationship to children was as Kahlil Gibran so aptly expressed in The Prophet:

From the traditional point of view, many of the difficulties that we experience in modern times are directly related to this lack of knowledge and support from our parents, peers, and society regarding our Essence, Being and Personality.

 Thus, instead of being nurtured to express who we really are, our true nature becomes suppressed as we try to mold our Self into what others expect us to be. This suppression causes us to lose touch with the natural gifts of our unique Essence, Being and Personality type. Over time, suppressing our true nature can wreak havoc with all aspects of our physical, psychological and supramental health.

For the next seven years (from ages 7 through 14), the child was schooled in the learning and wisdom of the elders of the community.

There were no secrets among priests, and all that was known was shared. The most exceptional children were retained for maintaining the community heritage while the others were still given instruction but went on to life occupations equally necessary for the community.

For the third period of seven years (from 14 to 21 years of age), a youngster faced the challenge of finding their place in society. But deciding on livelihood, direction or career path was handled very differently than today’s model.

This relationship to our job or work means there is no need to separate what we do from who we really are. The outcome of approaching things this way is that each person adds to the reservoir of light and love in the world.

There was also a high regard for excellence and craftsmanship in whatever path or vocation was chosen. For this reason, before going off to schools of higher learning young people were given opportunities to be an apprentice in whatever areas they were interested in. This empowered them to learn from their own experience what they wanted to know, be and do.

Our current educational system, structure and model tends have things backwards. This reflects the degree of separation and fragmentation of our Self and how we go about living Life, and results in wasting valuable resources of everyone’s time, effort and money.

In our current day and age, how often are children given career tests even before high school and asked to decide on a career path before they have ever experienced life? And how often are thousands of dollars spent on a vocational or college education, and once a degree is in hand the person realizes they aren’t interested in working in that particular field for the rest of their life?

Getting a Jump In Time

Civilizations reflect the people that comprise them, and they move forward when the people share a common direction that serves a common aim (even if the aim and direction is unconscious).

Civilizations begin to break down when the people no longer have an overall sense of common direction. When everyone seeks to gain their own advantage and are looking out only for themselves, this ignores that we are all interconnected, interrelated and in this together, and that what one does affects everyone else.

Classical Traditional Medicines are the accumulation of the greatest wisdom knowledge down through the ages. Although descriptions of the way the world once was is the heritage of all our religious, cultural and traditional mythology, you are invited to believe and incorporate whatever makes sense or feels accurate to you, and ignore the rest.

We can either learn and remember (individually and collectively) what has worked in the past and build upon historical lessons learned and wisdom gained as we move forward (work smart); or we can learn everything from scratch, by trial and error, repeating all the past mistakes that others have already learned (work hard) – which takes more of our time, effort, money and energy.
